Wild Banana Gallery opened in the spring of 2000 in the historic town of Wailuku, and Wild Banana quickly became the goto showroom for the disenfranchised but serious Maui Artist.
Spearheaded by Adrianne Martinez and David Whitney, given life by Dave Cripe, Wild Banana was a haven, the hub – a place to work outside the rules of Maui Tourist Art production bubble. They attracted artists from all over the world. and when 9-11-2001 hit… the flimsy alternative local art market could not sustain itself quickly 6 like minded neighborhood galleries closed. So they took the show on the road – creating shows in unconventional spaces, the eventually literally hitting the road with the Mark Mothersbaugh show, and an eventual mega show in San Francisco, where the hosted work from 10 Countries, 5000 square foot mansion featuring 1000 pieces of art, a 3 week exhibition – that nobody heard of.
